Sandra O’Boyle joins Heavy Reading

Heavy ReadingCongratulations to Sandra O’Boyle who has joined Heavy Reading to lead its research on customer experience management and customer analytics related to the network and services, customer care, billing and marketing.

She is also looking more broadly at how service providers are reinventing digital operations with a “customer first” focus and adopting big data strategies.

Immediately prior to joining Heavy Reading, Sandra was working as a freelance writer and analyst for companies such as Analysys Mason. She had previously been with Current Analysis before leaving there to work in strategic marketing for Rohde & Schwarz’s ipoque, a network traffic and subscriber analytics vendor.



Creative Strategies hires Carolina Milanesi on consumer tech

Carolina MilanesiIn a high-profile move, Carolina Milanesi has joined Creative Strategies as principal analyst where she will be focused on consumer tech across the board, from hardware to services.

Carolina is one of the most well known analysts in the consumer devices and services market. She is often found quoted in the media (e.g. FT, Bloomberg, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal), regularly appears on TV (e.g. BBC, Bloomberg TV, Fox and NBC News) and her Twitter account was recently listed in the “101 accounts to follow to make Twitter more interesting” by Wired Italy.

Carolina first built her reputation at Gartner, where she spent 14 years, latterly as its consumer devices research VP and agenda manager. More recently, she has been chief of research at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech where she drove thought leadership research by marrying her deep understanding of global market dynamics with the wealth of data coming from ComTech’s longitudinal studies on smartphones and tablets.

Better known in the US than in Europe, Creative Strategies was one of the first market research firms in Silicon Valley. Carolina herself describes Creative Strategies as having a “strong reputation for delivering impactful insight to top execs in the Valley.”  She will be working alongside Tim Bajarin and Ben Bajarin, two other well-known industry analysts and commentators.

Current Analysis hires Tony Cripps to cover IoT

Tony CrippsCongratulations to Tony Cripps who has just landed himself a shiny new gig as Principal Analyst, IoT Innovations at Current Analysis.

Most recently an independent analyst and strategy consultant, Tony has also worked as an industry analyst with Ovum, where he focused primarily on consumer tech and mobile devices and platforms. He started his career as an IT journalist for Computerwire.


Paris Burstyn leaves Ovum

Paris BurstynAnyone who has worked as an analyst or in analyst relations in the telecommunications market in recent years is likely to know Paris Burstyn.

Most recently, he was a senior analyst at Ovum where he covered wholesale  telecoms for seven years.

Well, he’s now moved on and is establishing himself as a blogger at Paris on Telecommunications which has the tag-line, “Thoughts that drive growth for communications service providers.

In his own words: “this site will host my thoughts and analysis about the continuing changes taking place in the telecoms/Internet industry. I plan to deliver ideas that will catalyze creative thinking throughout the business and encourage readers to discuss their ideas with me and other readers.”

I’m looking to reading his thoughts.


What is analyst relations?

I came across this while sorting out some stuff recently.

It’s a wonderful summary of what analyst relations is and comes from John Mihalec, who was head of IBM analyst relations. It dates back to 2005 but seems as relevant and useful as it ever did.

“…in the computer business there are all these research firms who write about the industry and provide advice to customers about what to buy, at the same time they also provide advice to the computer vendors about how to sell… it’s our job in Analyst Relations to make sure these research firms understand IBM’s products and strategies, and become convinced that IBM is doing the right things for customers. It’s also our job to listen to what the analysts are saying about us, and to make sure IBM harnesses the wisdom in those assessments.”

Do you need to pay Gartner to be in the Magic Quadrant?

gartner-logoIt’s been interesting reading some of the recent posts and comments on Linkedin about Gartner and its supposed lack of independence.

I’ve been an AR professional for 15 years now and work for a variety of technology and telecoms companies (large and small). Some have Gartner contracts, some don’t.

I have never seen or heard of any evidence that says you can buy your way on to a Magic Quadrant. Nor does the amount of money you spend influence where you appear on the MQ.

My personal experience supports that. I’ve had clients who spend a lot of money with Gartner fail to be included on an MQ (or be included but not where they wanted to be). I’ve had clients who spend no money with Gartner be included on an MQ – and in good positions.

You don’t need to spend any money to brief a Gartner analyst

Briefings are free.  There’s a process to follow – it’s called Vendor Briefing – and most of the time, it works fine. It makes no difference whether you’re a big vendor or small vendor. You don’t need to be a client.

What matters is making it clear to the analyst why they should be interested in you. usually that’s as simple as making sure that you ask for a briefing with an analyst that’s relevant and covering your market sector. If you’re not sure who the right analyst is, then the Vendor Briefings process allows you to pick broad coverage areas.  You can also nominate the analyst you want to brief.

Make it clear why your business is relevant in the request form, let the analyst choose the best date for them, and most times, your request will be accepted.

You can buy time with the analyst

Remember, you cannot buy the opinion of a Gartner analyst. Nor do you need to be a client to brief a Gartner analyst.

But there is one big advantage to being a Gartner client. What you are buying isn’t just the research, it’s time with the analyst to get their insights and advice.  And that is massively important.

As a vendor, I can brief an analyst perhaps four times a year. And analysts aren’t supposed to provide me with any feedback during a vendor call. Gartner advice is only available to its clients.

As a client, I can talk to my target analysts every week or so. I can find out what they see happening in the market, what they think is important, what they like about my business and what they think I should do differently.

If I’m smart, I use this feedback to build a stronger, better business. I make sure the way I position my company to Gartner reflects back what I’ve been told is important.

And just as importantly, I have many more opportunities to build a relationship and get known.

It’s impossible for an analyst to remember all the details of the hundreds of technology vendors that they follow. Our job as AR professionals is to make sure that the analyst remembers the companies we work for.  Some of that might be to do with how often we talk to the analyst, a lot more of it is about what we say.

You don’t need to be a Gartner client to be included in a Magic Quadrant

This is an urban myth. Gartner tries hard to make sure all potential vendors of interest are invited to take part in relevant MQs etc.  You don’t need to be a client to be considered for inclusion on an MQ.  You will need to meet certain inclusion criteria though, and if you don’t then you’re out – client or none-client.

If you’re not sure whether Gartner knows about you, find the relevant MQ, identify the analyst writing it and request a briefing and get on their radar.

Rogue salespeople

Many of the stories of Gartner’s willingness to favour clients comes from companies who’ve met a rogue salesperson. There are some account managers out there who do claim that spend will influence analyst opinion. They’re not telling you the truth.

If it happens, call them out and ask them to be explicit about what can be achieved. Ask them if they’ll refund you if that doesn’t come true. Truth is these guys just want to make the sale and play off the industry’s desire to believe that Gartner can be bought.

Should Gartner name its customers?

I’ve never really understood why Gartner insists it won’t disclose its vendor client base (I sometimes wonder if it’s because we will suddenly find out that some big vendors don’t use Gartner!)

However, I don’t think it would make any difference.  Just publishing a list of client names will then lead to people wanting to know how much each vendor is spending and what type of services they’re buying.  That’s clearly confidential information and Gartner would be right not to provide it.

The argument would continue.

Barring analysts from taking the vendor dollar?

To those who suggest that analysts shouldn’t be allowed to take the vendor dollar, be prepared to see a market even more dominated by Gartner.  I estimate that over 90% of the analyst firms in the world would disappear overnight.

Vendor Independence

There’s an irony in people criticising Gartner while praising the independence of smaller analysts firms. According to numbers from Knowledge Capital Group (KCG), Gartner does more business with enterprise buyers than technology vendors.  It would still be a $1.5-billion-dollar business with no vendor revenue.

If Gartner got caught compromising its advice to enterprises because they were paid by vendors, those end-user customers would disappear very quickly and so would Gartner’s business.

On the other hand, there are plenty of small firms (let’s be frank, almost every small firm) which make 100% of their revenue from vendors.  With rare exceptions, these guys operate in an ethical and independent manner.

But if business is tough and you have a roof to keep over your head and a family to feed, there must be a temptation sometimes to take the vendor dollar and sing the vendor tune.

Thankfully, in my experience, “pay to play” firms are not the norm.  It happens sometimes but these guys usually get called out. And that’s the way it should be.

Analysts are valuable and influential because they’re independent and objective. And thankfully, in my experience the vast majority, including Gartner, are – regardless of whether they have vendors as clients or not.

Tom Raftery leaves Redmonk

Tom RafteryI’ve spotted that Tom Raftery has left Redmonk where he headed up the company’s cleantech, energy and sustainability practice, Greenmonk.

According to his blog post, Tom’s got nothing definite planned but is “talking to a number of people about next steps, and some exciting opportunities are already starting to present themselves.”

I missed this when Tom first announced it last month so perhaps others did too.



Engaging with industry analysts on a tight budget

Dale VileIf you’ve not seen it already, I’d like to suggest you head over to LinkedIn and read the post by Dale Vile of Freeform Dynamics on “Engaging with industry analysts (as an IT vendor) on a tight budget

He looks at why there should be more to AR than just caring about those firms that act as “advisors in your sales engagements” and/or produce the signature Gartner Magic Quadrant, Forrester Wave and IDC MarketScape reports we’re all familiar with.

To give you an idea, four of his headline reasons are:

  • Let analysts help you see the world as it really is
  • Analysts can often tell your story better than you can – use this
  • Look to get more from analysts than you actually pay for
  • Help yourself by helping the analyst

IDC looks to drive innovation, collaboration

Interesting to see IDC has created a new role – chief analyst for the European region – “specifically to drive innovation in new research topics and deliverables, to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing, and to increase customer satisfaction.”

Congratulations to Phil Carter who has been appointed to the new position. As part of his promotion, he will continue to manage the European Enterprise Software and Infrastructure research teams.

I’ll grant you three wishes…

Picture the scene.

A world-class analyst from a highly renowned international firm decides they love your company so much that they are going to grant you one free wish (the analyst being slightly less generous than the proverbial genie).

What do you pick?

1) Should they get on the phone and give a glowing recommendation to the hot prospect that sales are desperately trying to close?

2) Perhaps it would be a day with your sales and marketing team, where the analyst shares their knowledge on current market developments and provides an insight into the hot technology and business buttons?

3) Or maybe it will be to have the analyst talk to a journalist at the FT and give them a favourable quote for the big IT feature which is coming up.

As I thought about this, I was instinctively thinking that the choice was between 1) and 2). Analysts deliver real commercial benefit not PR fluff.

And then I thought some more. It’ll completely depend on where your business is.

Might sales be able to close that prospect anyway? Are the sales and marketing team already industry gurus? If so, are you wasting the opportunity? How much use could you get out of that FT story?

We should never forget that there is so much more to AR than getting good quotes for the press (something many PR companies seem never to have learnt or have simply forgotten).

But we should also remember that sometimes providing the quote could be the best thing we ask the analyst to do.
